This document is designed to explain Toll-Free Fraud and how NumHub manages it.
As you may know NumHub is a carrier neutral independent RespOrg. This means that NumHub manages numbers in the SOMOS database on behalf of their clients. NumHub is behind the carrier wall and cannot see, or trace incoming/outgoing calls. As a 3rd party RespOrg there is a process we must take to ensure that we are properly handling Fraud Reports. We've included a simplified diagram below:
Q: I've received a call from a Toll-Free number saying they are with a legal department (ECT). But when I called them back it was a completely different company?
This is called Spoofing! What this means is someone "Stole" the caller ID of the legitimate company so their fraudulent call appeared real. Unfortunately, these calls are hard to track as you don't want to disconnect the actual number of the legitimate company.
The FCC is launching a program to help combat these types of fraud with call authentication. You can read more about what the FCC is doing here:
